This is James Hetfield's Vocal Track for the song Fade To Black off the album Ride The Lightning

"Fade to Black" is a song by thrash metal band Metallica from their second album, Ride the Lightning (1984). It was the first musical ballad released by the band, and is considered to be the precursor to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "One" and "The Day That Never Comes" due to strong similarity in sound, structure, and subject matter. It was ranked as having the 24th best guitar solo ever by Guitar World magazine readers.[1] It is one of Metallica's most famous songs.

The song is featured as a playable track in the video game Guitar Hero: Metallica.

Background

In an interview with drummer Lars Ulrich on the set of the production "MTV Icon: Metallica" in 2003, he recalls how he and bandmate James Hetfield were obsessed with death at the time the album and song were produced. It was written after almost all of their equipment, including a very rare amplifier, given to singer/rhythm guitarist James Hetfield by his mother just before she died, was stolen in Boston, MA, following a gig at the Channel Club on 14 January 1984. This event forced Metallica to borrow equipment from fellow tour band and friends, Anthrax, for the remainder of the tour. The lyrics suggest a man contemplating, then eventually committing, suicide. It begins with an acoustic guitar introduction and becomes progressively heavier as the song goes on.

Since its release, "Fade to Black" has been a fixture in Metallica's live performances. It was also the last song that Metallica performed live with former bassist Jason Newsted. Jason's last gig was at the VH1 Music Awards on November 30, 2000. It was one of Newsted's favorite Metallica songs, and was said to be of great sentimental value to him, although it had been written before he had joined the band. Jason Newsted's previous band, Flotsam And Jetsam, performed a song called "Fade To Black" on their 1986 album Doomsday For The Deceiver before Jason left to join Metallica, although it bears no resemblance to the Metallica version.

  • Ghost-Hetfield :D

  • I have to say that this is my favorite song from Ride The Lighting...even though the whole album was an epic damn album.

  • in my opinion best metal voice everr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @valentinoviki Its weird but cool how many people this band reaches. Personally Im not into any thing after the Black album-and the Black album being the least of my favorites of the others,,however Death Magnetic is the best thing Iv heard from them since the Black record. They like to experiment with music and I can dig it, but to me there's enough other bands out there to find something different-its like,I get it "U guys can do it all!" Ill always go see them live tho,and be satisfied!-Peace

  • @MDC01FLY U r exactly right.. I am a new fan of metallica.. had been to the concert recently.. found so much difference with his vocals back then and now.. I know it is because of the age but there r a lot of vocalists like Bruce Dickinson, even after 30 yrs there hasn't been much difference..But I luv James vocals more now which is similar to post 90's era.. yeah, ve listened to all the songs u listed.. Luvin Metallica to the core.. Thanks for ur sensible comment..

  • @valentinoviki At 1st I was thinking what a stupid comment u made, but as I was about to comment how much I missed James voice from back in the day I realized that you're probably a younger person or new fan of the newer stuff 'first' ..I can see how you thought it was someone else-it was all greater then! So enjoy the Metallica you have yet to discover-Kill em All, Ride The Lightening (My 1st fav) Master of Puppets, ...and Justice for all (2nd fav)-You have a lot of work to do, now go!

  • @Linkaara DERP.

  • You mean Johnathan davis sounds like James.

  • @tatemalmsteen It's not so important...his voice is magnetic
