  • I don't know what all the arguing is about on here...they were ALL great ships...The Germans. The British. The Japanese. The Americans...just enjoy the film for what it is(incidentally--not all of these photos are Iowas...I have the video paused at 0.38 and I am looking at a North Carolina Class...Also see some South Dakota Class stuff on here...just nitpicking)

but that bit of bitching done,I would say that EVERY action's outcome is based on circumstance..can ANYONE agree with me?

  • @Guitfiddlejase sir....the ships look iowa to me thats why i added them in.....but yes i agree with you too.....

  • Who the hell made the decision to use Daft Punk as backing music for a video on battleships??? Obviously someone who's in the U.S Navy methinks ;)

  • @source1zero I DID

and no im not in the navy

  • @tomanyasses: you must be a yank, pride is always your first line of defense, the yamato not only outmatched the iowa, it outsized it, it out maneuvered it, it out powered it, the iowa is only 2 knots faster than the yamato and yet it weighs much less than the yamato, and it has poor evasive capabilities, it relied in 4 CIWS retrofitted phalanx guns for AA while still retaining it OLD 16" guns, and it cant even take a hit from its own guns unlike the yamato, face it, iowa is junk.

  • @knickknock4 i guess we found out about ur eego.........iowa is SO better that yamato

If by the "mightiest big gun vessels" of all time, we should consider the mightiest guns EVER put on a battleship.

    Then here is a surprise for everybody;

The Littorio Class battleships had the most powerful guns.

Their 381/50 Ansaldo main guns where the most powerful ever put on any battleship before and since. Period !

They could shoot FOUR(4) miles further than Iowa and TWO(2) miles further than Yamato, with more armor penetrating power than both.

    An Interesting unknown fact!

  • @knickknock4 The biggest difference is that the Yamato and Iowa were built for different purposes. The Iowa class doesn't need AA capabilities with a Ticonderoga sitting at her side. However, there is NOTHING left on the seas that can match the specific firepower of those 16" guns still on the Iowa class. If you are on the beach and want some fire support, those guns are STILL extremely effective.

  • I am American. American, German, British, Japanese...whatever. It's pointless to argue over what was better 70 yrs ago. I like ours, and the Yamato, as well as the Bismark and Turpitz. I like the power, size, and romanticism regardless of nation. I remember being in the us navy 12 yrs ago, and seeing the Missouri in the mothball fleet in Washington all alone. Such a proud ship and no cared to see her until she was being moved to Pearl Harbor. I wish I could visit the Bismark and Yamato also.

  • @knickknock4

It only outmatched the Iowa in bore size and weight. The Iowa was more maneuverable than the Yamato which is important in Naval Warfare. BUT, the US Navy had planned a Montana Class battleship that would outclass the Yamato in every aspect, but cancelled due the Aircraft Carrier and Air superiorty having become the main focus in the Pacific.

  • USS Wisconsin(BB-64) , 2nd Division (1988-91) Vet here. Great post!!

  • LOOK AT ALL THE NAVAL WARFARE EXPERTS ON YOUTUBE!

  • question: does america still use these kind of ships with these big guns? cuz i thought all the ship nowdays use missles against each other

  • from germany ,usa marins the best, this ship wunderfull.

  • @knickknock4 as originally designed, the Iowa could keep our her own shells.. it wasn't till the 16" 50 caliber guns along with the super heavy 2700 lb AP shells came on line that she wasn't able to keep her own shells out.

  • @knickknock4 Your ignorance is glaring, first of all the Iowa were capable of speeds in excess of 33 knots. So for practical purposes we will limit it to 5 knots. The Iowa would have the advantage of deciding when and where to fight. With her fire control computer she was 10 times more accurate, the Iowa would simply sit at extream range where the Yamatos guns had no more penetrating power than her own and pound her to pieces. The Yamato has ZERO chance against an Iowa class.

  • You're gona need a bigger boat
