This is a condensed version of my thesis film. In the film print there are sections of text in both the beginning and end of the film, which unfortunately are not legible in this small resolution; essentially what the text says is that the film is inspired by the life and work of Bruno Schulz, and gives details about his murder by an SS officer in 1942. (If you have not read Bruno's writings, look for "The Street of Crocodiles",aka "The Cinnamon Shops", and "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass". They are marvelous.)
The animation was shot under a 35mm Oxberry camera, drawn using charcoal and pastels on paper. I only used cells for the mattes in the lighting effects- everything else is paper with the negative space cut out (basically like cells, but not cells).

The film print is copyright The University of Southern California. The animation and artwork are copyright Joshua E. Harrell. The Music is copyright Lucas A. Marquardt.

(I will Upload a version with better sound later on... I didn't hear the clipped sections until after I uploaded it.)

  • Sounds are simillar to these from "Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą" movie directed by Jerzy Has... YOU should watch it...;D

  • Thank you for sharing this. I had not come across this film before, nor had my composer... I'll have to see if I can find a copy on DVD. :)

  • today Drohobycz belong to Ukraine. I see you are really interested at B. Schulz. I'm from Poland and here isn't hard to find something about him, altouhg he isn't famous. You can search some articles from Artur Sandauer, Witold Gombrowicz, Jerzy Jarzebski. There is a film "The Hourglass Sanatorium". Its my topic for secondary school certificate, so i have some info about him. I'm really surprised that no- Polish are interested at Bruno Schulz=)cya

  • Thanks for the info... I will look into Sandauer, Gombrowicz, et Jarzebski... I think that Schulz is a literary treasure (even translated in English... sorry I don't read Polish yet.) If you could point me in the direction of some of the other articles you mentioned, I would appreciate it very much...

  • So wanderful. I really liked. I knew about and read Schulz one or two years ago. And I don't know where get the other movies you say. But I'll tray to see it. Thanks a lot for your work.

  • great!

  • Thank you

  • indeed Bruno Schulz was a genius!!! i like your film too.

  • lovely!

    schulz is my favorite writer

    interesting take on his work/life

  • He planned to write an essay on Schulz and Osip Mandelstamm (both together) - he claimed there are many reasons to 'split' them. He wasn't satisfied with the Schulziana written by Sandauer (too 'psychoanalytic' and 'scientific' or 'scholastic') nor by Gombrowicz (protectional). But then, what do we have??

Yes, we have our own brains.

  • The problem is what Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski (another great Polish writter) had written: there is no mature reception of his prose, a kind of what Camus was writting on Kafka (or Herling on Kafka). Herling was saying that all the American feedback was "stupid" (eg. Saul Bellow's book). He planned to write some about Schulz, unfortnately he died before he did it.

  • whaaat? B.Schulz IS famous in Poland!certainly! at least i hope they still teach Him in the secondary schools.my favourite writer of all i guess.

i like the video much : ) fits the symbolic atmosphere of Schulz's works. keep up the good work!
