re; the P&G soaps---most of the P&G products advertised on their daytime dramas have either been discontinued(Camay, dash, thrill
,citrus hill) or sold-Crisco,Jif,Folger's,Zest, coast, prell spic and span, top job---now they depend on overpriced shampoos and imported junk like swiffer, febreeze candles; the products that are made in USA are contracted out to virtual sweatshop. it was once said that P&G didn't need unions because they were so paternalistic toward their workers PURE GREED -
it is a miracle that GL lasted as long as it did considering it was moved from 3pm et to 10am et on the CBS flagship WCBS-TV, in the country's largest media market, at first to make way for a Westinghouse(owner of CBS at the time)produced news type show. it lasted a few months and then the timeslot was filled with syndicated crap and GL remained in the wilderness at 10 am. too bad there is not an EastEnders type of show on.a LI NY PBS station shows two episodes per week from 2004 and it's good

too bad that the writing is so bad on all of them; totally ridiculous; I think that they all tried to copy the most ridiculous of them all, the Young and the Restless. what total bizarre crap---I remember when Kay Chancellor had her on-air plastic surgery; really? she was ripped off---who can forget when Victor Newman had hair club for men Paul imprisoned in his living room?! with prison bars because he had "an affair" with Newman's wifeGOOD LORD

They're writing stupid stories that are far out there. If the writers focused on character driven stories people would tune in more.

Perhaps they could move some of these soaps into primetime, given they provide far better drama than what's offered nowadays in the virtually comatose state that primetime network TV acting shows have slipped into (compared to previous decades)

oh my God, I've been watching for 20 years now. Oakdale is in my blood and almost feel like family. And you don't cancel family. I am heartbroken and very, very sad. If there is some other network interested in a super fantastic show, please, please continue As the World turns!!!

Wow first Guiding light now ATWT. I am only 23 and been watching it since i was 14. I always thought soaps would be on forever but it has been on for a long time. I guess all things must come to an end.

Unfortunately, As the World Turns will be canceled in September 2010. I hope Helen Wagner will be part of the final episode (since she is 91).

I agree with what you said. Now I don' t have to post it.
I'm pissed that Deirdra Hall and Drake Hogestyn got fired!!! I don't watch General Hospital because I watch Days of our lives and that's where their going.
They better not cancel As The World Turns!!! That is my favorite soap now since it's the only one I watch that's not hanging on one story line!!!

I don't know much about soaps, but even I know that those two have been on Days forever. I'm shocked that they have been let go.
> only one I watch that's not hanging on one story line
Although the writing is often flawed, I do like how ATWT has several very distinct storylines. At least one tend to be very good. Yesterday's confrontation of Jack vs Carly, Janet, etc was incredible.

ATWT's ratings are in the bottom 4 again, after reaching Top 3 in early 2008. That peak was unusual given that they were usually in the bottom 3. After Will & Gwen left Oakdale and Martha Byrne's (Lily) departure, ratings dropped dramatically again, landing them in the bottom 4.

Since Proctor & Gamble sponsors Guiding Light (often in the bottom 2) and ATWT, it may have to drop one of these low rated soaps to remain profitable. Sadly, these two shows are the longest running soaps on US TV, both having been around since the 1950's. P&G may decide to keep the older GL over ATWT just so that it can continue the record of oldest soap.

ATWT has already gone through some major budjget cuts where actors accepted lower salaries. In fact, Byrned esd do bitter because she took a salary cut but felt that the producers didn't return the favor by promising her a set number of episodes. Hence she left under bad circumstances.

Other examples of the budget cuts include the ibcreased use of hand held cameras (note the shaky camera effects) and more on location shots. They always seem to end up in NYC since that's where ATWT is shot (Brooklyn) -- even though Oakdale is far from NYC.
You can readily see ATWT's low budget by comparing its hospital scenes with the ones from All My Children in this report.
