When I'm not playing the ukulele I make lanterns which are hand carved from a recycled tin can. The lantern is cleaned and polished and sprayed with a clear estapol to prevent rusting. They're Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. They project cool flickering images. Great for outdoor dining.

  • beautiful work..id love to try that..i have a dremel and so far i have used it very little. could you please tell me what carving tools work best for you? I wanted to make some for halloween :) I would assume you use a special flame resistant paint?

    thanks for sharing that!

  • Hi skygirl,

Thanks for stopping by. I use a clear varnish to finish off the can so that it doesn't rust.

I find the carving tools to be the best.

  • Hey Shas,

I use a dremel rotary tool. I find a design that I really like and work out how it should be carved into the recycled can. I use a series of different carving tools on the dremel and then sand all the metal shavings off. Them I polish it and spray with a clear enamel and put a handle on the top.

I gave a bunch away last year as xmas presents.

  • yes, please do a video demo to help get all of us started!?

  • Love these, would be excellent if you could make a video on how exactly you make them.

  • Hand carved?

Like, with an Exacto knife kinda carved?

    They are really cool.

Beautiful, useful, and kind to all concerned.

    Do you gift them?

    Or sell them for income?

    I'm really interested.
