This clip displays the flight of the five-foot long Hydra I sounding rocket launched from the lagoon at Pt. Mugu, California on 18 March 1960 by the U.S. Navy's Project Hydra. The motor was solid-fueled and operated only very briefly at the beginning of the flight. The vehicle returned safely and was re-flown later even though no means were included to decelerate it prior to impact in the water. This clip is courtesy of CAPT John E. Draim, USN (Ret'd).
