Yeah the pilot was a friend of my dad's.
I'm currently training in Perth to become a commercial pilot. I am originally from Vanuatu that's why I know the aircraft :) and a couple of the pilots who work for airvanuatu which owns vanair now as well

hey it's alright come to think of it my answer wasn't so pleasant either lol.....yeah just thought I'd clear it though because it wasn't maintenance issues which brought it down...unfortunate confusion due to severe weather, there is a plaque out at mele beach explaining the crash.

Looking back 1 year to the comment I wrote on that ditched VanAir plane, I feel quite bad at the general tone of what I wrote.
The comment seems quite disrespectful now when I read it back after all this time.
I did not intend for it to be disrespectful in any way. The downing of that plane was a tragedy for the whole region.
Bad weather? Oh. I was sure it was a maint issue. You sound like you know, mji69, so I must have got it wrong

They are in good nick, and that aircraft you are referring to didn't crash due to technical difficulties but because of bad weather that made the pilot unsure of his position... I knew the pilot and it was an unfortunate turn of events....nothing to do with the aircraft themselves

I'm sorry to dissapoint you but that is a load of bull....Firstly they don't have Dash 8s with Vanair, now part of Air Vanuatu. They have twin otters, the trilander as well as an ATR42
