Having made many promises to myself in the past and having thought of many ideas that I haven't acted upon, I have come to the conclusion that in order to achieve success, my goals and aspirations need to be both written and attainable.

You will often hear people say that writing goals down is a waste of time and it's far better to leave these things to happen or just go with the flow. I challenge you to find one successful business leader who will agree with this approach. Writing your goals down brings you one step closer to achieving them.

Find focus for what you want in 2010. Looking forward, give some thought to setting goals that will make you push yourself harder than you have in the past. A goal should not be easy, but it should also be something you can reach. Real success comes through hard work.

The old saying "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars" is the whole point. If you do not know what success looks like, how will you know when you get it? You will know because you have written down a measurable goal to achieve.

Here are 7 great tips for setting goals and taking action right now:

1. Set aside some time today (1-2 hours) to contemplate the last 12 months and even further and identify what you want in the future. Make it a priority to know where you want to go in 2010 and where you want to be even further ahead. These goals will become your "Why"; the reasons that you work so hard, and will keep you focused when you lose sight of the prize or have a bad day that makes you question why you're even doing anything at all.

2. Set three or four attainable goals in two areas: professional and personal. You do not want to just be focused on business, as there's more to life than meeting a quota. Do not set too many or to few goals, as this should not be too easy, nor should it be a burden. Like I mentioned, it's about being attainable.

3. Write your goals on paper first. Have a look over these and review. Are they big enough goals? Are they too easy? Do these goals allow you live the lifestyle you want? Once you're happy, transfer them to your computer using our form. Print three copies. One copy for you home, one for your desk at work, and shrink a third down so it fits in your wallet.

4. Review your goals often. Daily is best, but at least once a week. Keeping them in front of you and actively thinking about them will make it easier to make the tough choices each day because you'll be reminding yourself of the "why" and the reasoning behind why you do what you do, even when the going gets tougher and tougher sometimes.
