FDNY Fireboat 343 Launching Sept 11, 2009 - Eastern Shipbuilding Group

I was privileged to be able to attend the launching of the first of two new fireboats for the Fire Department New York on September 11, 2009. The boat being launched is named Three Forty Three - in memory of the 343 firefighters and paramedics who perished in the WTC attacks in 2001. These boats will replace the existing Fireboats which have been in service for over 50 years, most notably in their assistance on 9/11. Nice smooth launch.. be sure to turn up your bass speaker to hear the rumble as it rolls past!

I saw one of these steaming down the East River the other day as I was walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. It displaced a lot of water in its wake, the whole width of the river. Quite impressive.
