He was the understudy because he isn't playing the part of Fiyero. He's playing himself. He isn't believable at all. He comes off as her new very very very gay best friend. He also isn't singing for the part he's singing more for himself. Look at the way he looks out into the audience when he's holding out that note at 1:13. This whole song he's showing off, not playing the role.
