"It Had to Be You" is a popular song written by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn, and was first published in 1924.

The song was performed by Priscilla Lane in the 1939 film The Roaring Twenties and by Danny Thomas in the 1951 film I'll See You in My Dreams. The latter film was based loosely upon the lives of Gus Kahn and his wife Grace LeBoy Kahn. It was also performed by Dooley Wilson in the 1942 film Casablanca, Betty Hutton in the 1945 film Incendiary Blonde, and by Diane Keaton in the 1977 film Annie Hall. It was also performed in the film A League of Their Own by Megan Cavanagh.

  • My grandma used to dance to this one, with her mop while she washed her kitchen floor. Thanks for this one...it was appropriately sentimental..

  • @waterdog226 Usually you associate the 1920's with sentimental romantic music, but in this case I think that the lyrics are quite realistic. Somebody profesing love regardless of the faults in the other person. That is so often the case good girls loving bad boys, and there is no explaination for it. Must be hormonal.

But I do like the image of your gradmother dancing with a mop, as Jim White says "We spend all the time thinking of love and so little time feeling it"

  • Thank you for this. I spent a pleasant time with your music along with the links and a glass of wine. Enjoyed it very much.

  • @Idlinfarm Thanks for listening. There is something enchanting about music from a by-gone era, especially if it has a little bit of history and has been cover such artists a Billie Holiday

  • enjoyed it:]

  • @Wrongemboyo3 Thanks for taking the time to watch. All the best.

  • Really beautiful playing and singing of this. I love your version!

  • Of all the songs from the past, this is probably my favorite. I liked it in "When Harry Met Sally" when Harry Connick jr started it out and then gave way to Frank Sinatra.

  • @StubyStubyDoo I think they had a different approach to making music back in those days. The chord changes are so much subtler than what you get in most modern music.

  • @cinderellalifestyle Bent note... you know what they say... play a note wrong once it is a mistake... play it wrong twice and it is jazz :-)

  • I love your take on some of these old standards. Absolutely different and always entertaining and played superbly. Loved that
