You're right, I use it in both IL2 Sturmovik and a number of racing and FPS games. In IL2 it really is necessary if you are serious about playing, with racing games its not needed as much, in fact I play without it a lot because I prefer my speakers to my headphones and TrackIR clip. That said, I do still prefer using it to look left and right buttons, it is much easier to take a quick peak into the mirror than with look left and right buttons that blind you completely from the front view.
yea plus people like to look into the apex just like flying....

Seems like you don't really need it on racing games like flight sims, you only glanced to the side a few times
