Kolkata, the city formally known as 'Calcutta', is the last place on earth where human powered rickshaws are the usual way of getting about. But, is this tradition finally coming to an end?

The Mayor of Kolkata Bikash Bhattacharya believes that "one human being pulling another" is inhumane. But if he doesn't offer alternative employment the wallahs won't stop without a fight. As a taxi driver put it 'It's a face off... fights are about to begin.'

  • @The391956 : And finally, the communists are out of Bengal!

  • @geodesicks

awful to cut people out of their jobs

  • @kittykatro

    I agree

New York, London, Paris, San Francisco, Los Angeles

A lot of young Indian people could make big money

doing this as a chik thing being pulled in a rickshaw

  • i dont get it, the rickshaw goes as fast as the person can walk.. why not just walk?

  • With the communists kicked out now, life should get better in Kotkata and WB. Communists believe in keeping poor, so that their cadre grows.

  • sound is off

  • when I was in this beautifull country, I was in one. the guy was over 70 Im sure, still have a picture of him. I see he has to make money for food, but this guy should not have to do this...

Well; What you gonna do? I gave him rps 300, least I could do...

  • they should introduce these in New York!

  • Classic India haze in all those shots.

On a better note - I always tip these guys. Don't agree to a high price to begin with - but TIP well once you are there.
