@dvlaries I heard she also turned it down also because she said she didn't have the energy to play such a role. Not sure if it's true but it does take a lot out of an actor to do a dramatic role like the one in Mrs. Miniver

Norma was the First Lady of MGM winning the first Academy Award for her portrayal in the Divorcee with Clark Gable and Lionel Barrymore. Also, married to MGM"s "Boy Wonder" Irving Thalberg until his untimely death in 1937. After her last movie "Her Cardboard Lover" she faded into obscurity with inherited mental illness before passing away in 1983.

An exquisite creature. Truly the embodiment of class in it's purest form.

L.B. Mayer was ready to hand Norma "Mrs. Miniver," but she steadfastly refused it because she would not -at 40- play the mother of an army-age son. That choice should be her fans deepest regret since it proved to be MGM's most profitable film of 1942 and won Greer Garson in the lead a Best Actress Oscar. Miniver would have likely recharged Norma's career for at least a half dozen more years. :(
