"Viens, gentille dame", La Dame Blanche (1825), François Adrien Boieldieu, 6-10/07/1993.

Orchestre Philarmonique de Monte-Carlo / Patrick Fournillier.

EMI Recording / Enregistrement EMI.
---------------------------------------
Maintenant observons, écoutons.
Et puis attendons.
Viens gentille dame,
De toi, je réclame
La foi des serments !
A tes lois fidèle,
Me voici, ma belle,
Parais, je t'attends.
Viens, gentille dame,
Je t'attends, je t'attends etc.

Que ce lieu solitaire
Et que ce doux mystère
Ont de charmes pour moi !
Oui, je sens qu'à ta vue
L'âme doit être émue.
Mais, ce n'est pas d'effroi
Non, ce n'est pas d'effroi.
Viens, gentille dame, etc.

Déjà la nuit plus sombre
Sur nous répand son ombre :
Qu'elle tarde à venir !
Dans mon impatience,
Le cœur me bat d'avance
D'attente et de plaisir !
Parais-donc, je t'attends,
Viens, gentille dame, etc.
---------------------------------------
Now, let's watch,listen,
And then wait.
Come, noble lady,
I beseech you
To keep faith with your oath!
Faithful to your command,
I have come, my fair one.
Appear, I await you.
Come, noble lady,
I wait, I wait etc.

This lonely place
And this sweet mystery
Hold such charms for me!
Yes I feel that on seeing her
My soul must be moved,
But not with fear,
No, not with fear.
Come, noble lady, etc.

Already dark night
Casts its shadow over us:
How long she is in appearing!
In my impatience
My heart skips a beat
In pleasurable anticipation!
Appear then, I await you.
Come, noble lady, etc.

  • Unexpected, really unexpected, I have Minkowski's complete recording of the opera, with Blake as Georges. His singing there is characterful, animated and often attractive, but he is just better here: no nasality (that is often a part of his rendition in the mentioned recording); relaxed, soft singing; even better handling of the coloratura in the B section; thanks to all this, his portrayal is even more believable. Just wonderful :)!

  • Also unexpected and exceptional.... Your posting about "La Dame Blanche" and Rockwell Blake. I have posted a comment there!

  • Wonderful: Rocky rocks!

  • listen to David Devriès too!! It's wonderful!

  • Feitz Wnderlich sings this pieace in German. It is the best I've ever heard

  • The comment of akhcarubehc was not emphasizing what Blackes lacks, but how great Gedda is! I mean, Gedda is so great that Blake is, at his side, nothing.

  • I wouldn't go as far as saying that Blake isn't a 'real singer', au contraire, blake is a fantastic singer.. his instrument however is not (in this recording) as 'juicy' as Geddas.. it's all from a point of view tho

  • you are so right

  • Pas mal, but when one hears Gedda singing this aria, one knows what a real singer is!!!

  • no nasality ??? it's all over the place in this rendition !

  • Just as your comment gives me a headache.

  • I get a sore throat listening to this!
