Did you guys know that you can press A at any time to go into a bubble if it's too tough or you're falling behind? This can prevent you from dying and allows you to keep your power-ups. However if everybody ends up in a bubble then you will return to the map. So don't press A if you're the only one that is not in a bubble that is still alive.
