AJWS mourns the loss of Sonia Pierre, Executive Director of the Dominican Haitian Women's Movement. A recipient of the 2010 International Women of Courage award, Sonia was a devoted advocate for social justice. Against all odds, the daughter of Haitian migrants and a proud Dominican woman, she fought for her right to be recognized as such. She fought not only for her right, but the right of her peers and Dominicans of Haitian descent across the Dominican Republic who were systematically denied the right to their nationality. She will be missed tremendously and remembered as a woman of great valor.
