Talking Tiki! From TikiTV.com, we talk story with Marcus Thorn. Australia's top Carver of Tikis. (Part One). He has an interesting and respectful approach to carving the god images of the pacific islands, and as an artist, and a carver, we had to get him on video. He is not a machine, he carves deliberately, carefully and the end result is quite beautiful. He carves old school style and will not hack out a cartoonish tiki during a three minute musical chairs number. He does take his time and the results are worth it. Marcus is here in Hawaii to do a few things with da ohana; Carve a major piece.... Learn of the ancient and local carving tradition of the islands... Visit the major and minor 'tiki" locales.. and generally, plant seeds for his further frequent visits to our islands.
Marcus is a heckuva nice guy, a fabulous artist, his heart's in the right place, and he is outstanding in his field. In fact, that's were I found him; Out standing in a field. He has many cool stories, conveyed via a cool accent, and he is as interested in others' stories as well. Here we talk about tiki carving in general, motivation, black velvet paintings, philosophy, beer, hotrods, the price of eggs in China, entomology, etc...
