Hi again.

After decades of dreaming with an all-composite Steinberger, the great Jauqo III-X ( http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jauqo+III-X&search_type=&... ) has made my dream come true (Thank you one more time!). Everything from this bass is truly awesome. The headless design has lots of advantages and the whole instrument is a master work of design.

But anyway I'm also a rabid fan of the EBMM Bongo and, since both basses' tone is very similar in nature (active/hi-fi), I wanted to make this comparison because the differences are very evident as well. As I put at the beginning of the video, I'm not biased toward any of these awesome instruments' tone. Both are fantastic to me, but I'd like to hear your opinion just for the sake of curiosity (YouTube should allow users to create polls).

Thanks for watching! Don't forget that, if you are looking for a slowed down version of "The Awakening" (based on Les Claypool's take on this Dexter Redding tune), you can find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHmyM5uCRzQ&fmt=18

EDIT: Some technical details I forgot to mention: The Steinberger has both pickups at full volume and the tone knob fully open (it doesn't have an active EQ system). The Bongo has both magnetic pickups and piezo bridge fully open and the 4-band EQ is set as follows: Lo-mids at flat position and the other three bands (lo, hi-mids and hi) slightly past flat, all by the same amount (around +1).

None of both basses has fresh strings and I don't know how old are the strings on the Steinie, but Bongo's (DR Hi-Beams) feel older.

  • What amp are you using?

  • @Midnightgroover: Thank you for your comment! It's a 30W Kustom KBA30 amp plugged to my sound card's auxiliary input.

  • Maybe im just wrong, anyways the best sound was when you played them together.

  • The Bongo has a nice jack-of-all-trades tone, but the Steinberger has a better slap/pop tone in my ears. More "piano like" lows, kinda growls, and like all others say, it has slightly more highs - all that's my opinion!

How good the playing is is a silly question, an easy 5er.

  • Es el mejor cover de la canción que he visto, acá en youtube, sólo superado por Les Claypool.

  • The coolest cover of this song ! Nice video, nice bass player and nice basses !!

  • I really didn't like the bongo sound, too much overdrive for a slap tone. I much prefer the Steinberger, it has a really clean sound, very articulate.

  • the Steinberger that I owned, an L2 was one of the best basses that I have ever played...remarkable clarity and unbelievable sustain....that was 10 years ago, and I still think about that bass. :-O

  • The Steiberg sounds more fluid, and with better sustain. BTW, love the video!!
