Teaching our little Rat Terrier to swim. In this video she wasn't too crazy about swimming but by the end of the lesson she was swimming out to retrieve her toys.

  • well done!

if she sees you are confident in the water, or another dog that she trusts, this can help overcome any fear she has.

It still looks very warm there. Does it ever get cold? Its cold and windy here.

Another good tip is use the dog's prey-drive to your advantage. Throw some real fur or feather in for her to retrieve.

  • Thanks! We are excited for her; she really came a long way in such a short time. The pool belongs to our friend and she has a dog that loves to retreive from the water so once Opal saw her jump in she was much more confident. We used a tennis ball to get her interested in the water and by the end of the lesson she was swimming out to retrieve it.

It looks warm but it was only about 75 degrees out so the pool was pretty cold. We'll have to wait to do more swimming unless we have a heat wave.

  • Well done Opal. and good work!

75F or (23C) is very warm by our standards! It rarely gets that warm here and when it does we all go swimming :)

    Its 41F here.
