Everyone is focused on fixing the school system, nobody is asking why we need a school system at all, kids could be engineers and scientists at 16 years old if they were allowed to choose what they they're interested in learning from a young age instead of being forced into a 12 year system that teaches nothing other than how to take standardized tests which has zero carry-over to the real world.
People need to understand that the public school system is not about education, it's about money.

I don't think you can shift all the blame on the educational system or the government. Schools are one side of the coin. The other side is the community where these kids live. You can have the best schools but the drug culture and fucked up communities (single parent households, neglectful/abusive parents etc) will draw the kids back in anyways.

what's messed up is that the funding a school gets is based on where it is - so a richer neighborhood will put more money into theirs because of taxes

yup, thats really how the school system is in Baltimore, I got a lil cousien who failed like 3 times, and has been getting suspended and expeled since she started school, she's 16 still in middle school and dont care.
