1990, Carl trained a colt named Unbridled who was owned by Frances A. Genter who, because of her height, could not see the race, so Carl gave her, his version of the call

  • I must confess, this one chokes me up every time, too. His fondness for Mrs. Genter is apparent. You get the feeling that he held her in the same esteem as his mother or grandmother, with great affection. A grand moment in television and Derby history.

  • 92 year old Frances Genter hadn't wanted to attend the race, knowing that she would be better able to see and hear it on TV, but Nafzger insisted that she come, promising that he'd be her eyes and ears. When Unbridled made his move, Nafzger told her, "He's taking the lead . . . There he is! There he is!" "He's gonna win. He's gonna win. He's a winner. He's a winner, Mrs. Genter. You've won the Kentucky Derby, Mrs. Genter. I love you!.

  • I cry , cry ,cry every time I see this, this is what horses and racing do for us... the love of this sport and animal cannot be explained, this video says it all

  • I always cry when I watch this. I saw it live and I never forgot it.

  • OMD/1 I want to bawl my eyes out!

  • omg i want to crie.

  • In a year where so much went wrong for horse racing, especially surrounding the Breeders' Cup, this is one lasting beautiful moment.

  • @everydaymommy you couldnt have said it better!!!

  • It wasn't because of her height; it was because of her eyesight!

  • Carl Nafzger definitely possesses two of the winning traits he defines in his book Traits of A Winner - ability and class. The 1990 Derby was one for the ages. Watching the guys carry Mrs. Genter in her wheel chair to the winner's circle was something I will never forget. She was one of the true ladies of the sport. Thanks for posting. It was awe-inspiring seeing this again.

  • He's the winner, he's the winner. Here he come's. He's gonna win. He's the winner. He's going to win the Kentucky Derby. He won. He won. You won. You won the Kentucky Derby....just awesome
