Yesterday I went to the Kara Walker exhibit at the Whitney, and found the actor who plays Chris Partlow on "The Wire" there browsing the work. Having those two worlds intersect was so surreal and perfect, I decided to pay homage by blending some of Walker's images with The Wire's theme song.

  • im using this woman as an inspiration to me in my art class

    on child trafficking

  • The theme song flattens the message. It almost, and pardon me for saying it this way, but it almost feels like the music is violating her silhouettes. Why do black people in America always have their historical misery expressed through such tropes? Or why should it be the only option? I doubt many of the victims of slavery ever sung about Jesus, which makes me laugh, because I know many people feel the exact opposite - precisely because they were brought up to believe otherwise.

  • @nizhoni27 No, its not new but, sometimes we "forget." Walker doesn't want us to forget the horror.

  • Black bodies in pain on display for white audiences. What's new about that? Nothing.

  • a manifest of slave demons?

  • This the best Kara video so far. It's hard to find videos that go into great depth of who she is and what her art represents.

  • Kara - Love Your Art!!!!!

In 1991, Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson were dating. Barack took Michelle on a date to a gospel music concert in Chicago. Shortly afterwards, he proposed and she accepted. Click on my link above "SnillusGospel" to see Barack and Michelle during the Mighty Clouds of Joy's performance of "Been In The Storm Too Long." .....

  • OMG... I saw the Kara Walker exhibit at the Whitney. Was absolutely stunning.

  • Sorry about the double post. :( I refreshed it and it didn't show, so I rewrote.

  • I love Kara Walker, thank you for posting this!

I have spent a good chunk of my day watching your videos, and I just want you to know that pretty much everything you talk about resonates deeply for me. I wish there were more people like you in the world.
