Why ever is this superb tune not better known outside the Philippines? Some of the YouTube versions are trashy, but this one shows you the real Filipino spirit. Much of Filipino music is indeed Spanish in sound, especially the change between major and minor. However most of the minor rulers in "Spanish" days were actually from Mexico and you can still sometimes see the big Mexican acoustic bass guitar in use.
I hoe we spend our Xmas deeply commited to giving .... Lalo na sa mga wala at kapos nating mga kababayan ... Maligayang pasko po at manigong bagong taon .
This is a 1933 Visayan carol and Tagalog lyricist Levi Celerio probably made hundreds of thousands on the song while the original Cebuano composer Vincente Rubi and lyricist Mariano Vestil died impoverished. The composer Vincente Rubi of Cebu could even afford to go to Manila to sue for royalties entitled to him. Maligayang pasko indeed. Another example of Tagalogs being ignorant of other Filipino cultures.
