I am nearly finished reading The Long Emergency. As a city planner, i am made aware of these issues on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I have observed that the greater public is still sleepwalking through the beginning of the impending crisis. Until mainstream media gets a reality check, and informs people of the necessary actions to take, we face a brutal shock.

I agree with James but I think many people will die from natural disasters in our near future. With earthquakes off the west coast of Oregon most likely leading to a huge tidal wave and with the Canary Islands off the east coast eventually falling into the ocean and also leading to a huge tidal wave, there is no doubt to me that millions will die in our near future.
Every decision we make today changes our future, unfortunately, most of our decisions are leading to disasters.

This video is annoying. I would have liked to see the entire interview. Whoever edited this thing really made it annoying. There is a great deal of what James Howard Kunstler said that I wanted to hear, but for some reason redpharmacist edited it out.

we'll be seeing loads ob bicycles with flat tires

This is the first smart thing this man has ever said. It is NOT the suburbs that are in trouble as much as it is the big cities. Big cities and the people that live there are doomed. Small towns and suburbs turned into small towns will be the future.
-
Here is why we are doomed. Today I saw Nancy Pelosi Dem. rep from CA. Doing EXACTLY what we can expect from politicians. Asking the government to release its oil reserves to drive prices down. Only price will get anyone to conserve. But lowering costs/helping the poor pay for oil is a ticket to office. She says "Natural gas is the way to go. "It's Cheap abundant and clean unlike fossil fuels". Nobody has told her natural gas is a fossil fuel and is neither cheap abundant or "clean" it seems.
-
I like Kunstler. But where are all these people in these fossil fuel cities going to go? He seems not to have the courage to say. Do you think we shall all suvive without oil and natureal gas? If so I'll be glad when you're gone. And no I don't want to know you. Time to die, good bye.
-
The national emergency is being taken as an 'emergency' in Germany, the entire country is mobilized to end there dependence on fossil fuel, and it seems they are the only country taking it seriously at the moment.

i guess 145 dollar oil is no big deal?
kunstler is great. I can't believe this clip only has 198 hits so far. We need to start reviewing our paradigm about what we consider to be a 'normal lifestyle' - flying on jet planes, universal happy motoring, etc. Check out Richard Heinberg, Matt Simmons, Julian Darley, David Holmgren, Colin Campbell for more on Peak Oil and our energy scarce future

Thanks for your comments. Since you're obviously interested in Peak Oil, notice that I also uploaded an interview I did with Richard Heinberg called "How to Power Down", and an interview I did with David Room (former North American Director of Post Carbon, producers of End of Suburbia) called "Preparing for Post-Carbon" Enjoy!
