I would rank Shirley Horn's rendition of this stunning song right next to Billie Holiday's. I use to only say Lady Day's version was the ONLY version I could listen to and love but now I can say Horn's version stands right next to it. And it's very hard to make something sung from Lady Day just as good.
I've been listening to early Shirley Horn's music and you are right. The way she phrased a song on her earlier work is just as perfect and flawless as her later work.

Even early Shirley's voice was exquisite and so distinctive.Phrasing was unmatched.She was just so damn good. I loved her.
