Correction the film was "The Toast Of New Orleans" and I think there was another Grayson Lanza picture filmed.Anyhow they looked and sounded great togteher.Allan Jones by the way was the Father of Jack Jones my favorite male pop singer from the 60's, 70's

Each version has it's own appeal. I prefer the blend of Dunne's soprano and Allan Jones tenor voices, Keel and Grayson are fine singers but I liked Grayson's ShowBoat duet with Tony Martin better than the sound with Keel.Keel and Grayson are terriic together in Kiss Me Kate and in Lovely To Look At ,but Graysons best vocal pairing was with Mario Lanza in Belle Of New Orleans , their duet of Be My Love is my favorite version of that song

I think they all were great in both versions.

The color version is gorgeous but they tried to make it more politically correct and to shorten it; left out too many songs and all the "downstairs" drama. This version is better as a result.

1951 version is the very very very best !! The most beautiful actors : Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, a real boat, In beautifull colour....everything is the very best !! Keel is more a MAN and Kathryn younger and ten times more beautyful.

@montgorhino Mmmm... I think Keel and Jones are equally good. It may depend on ones preference for tenors vs barotines. I prefer this version to the Grayson/Keel vehicle because it's much closer to the original stage version, including of course many of the original stars and more of the songs. I like Grayson and Keel a lot. But I like Jones and Dunne even more. Just see a few other clips with Jones in Showboat. Now, I'd love to hear Alfred Drake in showboat too!

The film has many highlights--my favorite, Helen Morgan's "Bill"...why is this film unavailable on DVD??
Many thanks for the downloads.

the difference to me between this and the later version is that I don't feel the chemistry or feeling between these two. It's like watching two singers give a concert, not two people serenading each other, falling in love. Beautiful voices though, too bad it's so distant. Partially the cameraman/director's fault.
Wonderful but I think Howard keel surpassed this in the later remake of showboat
Thanks for posting

Have to disagree with you about Howard Keel, but glad you enjoyed this version anyway. The show is full of wonderful songs.
