The Spring equinox (on or around March 21) marks the start of the New Year according to the Iranian calendar. Dating back to Zoroastrian times, Noruz (also transliterated as Nowruz, Navroze, Nevruz, Noruj, among other local spellings) is celebrated today in several countries around Iran and beyond, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The festival is also commemorated by the Parsi Zoroastrians of South Asia. Celebrants set up the "haft seen" table, which includes seven specific items starting with the letter 'S' or Sīn in Persian.

  • Great video Z! There are a few things I'd like to amnd: 1) Nowruz also can happen on March 22nd, 2) Many tables also include Serkeh (vinegar) and Samanu (sweetened wheat germ). It all depends on the family and regions. For instance, Tajiks set a Haft "Sheen" (objects beginning w/ the "Sh" sound) 3) According to the Shanameh, it was started by Jamshid, 4th king of the Pishdadian dynasty, which predates Zoroastrianism. However, there are many Zoroastrian traditions tied into the holiday.

  • Wow looks like we have a similar tradition here in Bulgaria-on the night before Christmas all the family gathers around a table,on which there must me 7 meals (not "s"-es) and non of them should contain meet or anything which comes from an animal. Also the dried fruit juice-we call it "oshav"

  • Very nice.
