While it may be odd, any occasion calling for solemnity in music, the Catholic Church in English speaking countries often turn to the C of E for such music. I have been an organist for the last 35 years, and we used this hymn for our 125th anniversary back in 1999. Yes, we as Catholics have our treasury of Latin based hymns, but there are hymns that are equal in beauty and proprietary as our own.

Wow... Like bradbavarde said, you are a great organist, and this piece is excellent! But your quickness to take offense at one comment here is sad, considering that as a church organist, you are supposed to bring people to give thanks to God, and as a Christian, you are supposed to turn the other cheek as Christ Himself did. Perhaps you should meditate upon some Psalms in addition to playing them.

I agree with Nostawyn 100%

I agree that anyone with the means to dress nicely should do so, but with the stipulation that the church has no right to bar someone from entering just because of the character of her dress.

Thank you. If you go to the traditional Latin Mass then you even see women with their heads coverd with hats and lace veils. The men are always in suits and ties. Once I went to a Life Teen Mass and I saw a girl with Pajamas. So much disrespect toward our Eucharistic lord, anywonder we have a vocation crisis.

I would agree that headphones, gum, and snacks are inappropriate. And cell phones should definitely be kept on silent. And a boob-tube is a TV, but do you mean tubetops? Because those erring a little on the skanky side. But I live in an area where not everyone can afford nice clothes, especially for kids who are still growing. Would you say they shouldn't come to church? And I still take issue with the word "trained". Animals are trained. Children are raised.

Neither blue jeans nor shorts are appropriate for Church; nor are tank tops, flip-flops, sneakers, cell phones, boob-tubes, chewing gum, loud jewelry, head phones, or snacks. Would you agre with that?

All children are trained. Potty trained, table-manners trained, trained how to speak to adults, etc... It's for the benefit of the child, unless you're some kind of left-wing hippie who neglects his children, which I would hope is not the case. I believe God wants us to put our best foot forward and make an effort to show respect when we attend church; our own comfort is not the #1 priority. That kind of thinking is what got us into the financial mess America is in now :-)

The other congregants dress the way they want to dress, too. Most of the older people wear dressy clothes, but the majority of the younger people are less formal. Again, I highly doubt that God cares what we wear and I know that the other congregants don't care, either. Also, I wasn't "trained" as a child. I was raised and I was raised quite well, thank you.
I am sorry, I didn't mean to touch a nerve. I never dreamed that "Here I am Lord" is a Catholic hymn. Still, despite the Vaughn Williams arrangement with the 4th verse Dowland fauxbourdon, it still seems wierd in a Catholic mass - imagine the Southern Baptists using Panus Angelicus as their choral introit. It just doesn't fit. You are, however, a great organist!

Thanks for your compliment. The version of "Here I am, Lord" I was referring to is the arrangement by Shutte. When it is used at the cathedral, it is usually used as the communion procession hymn. We usually use "Yaweh, I know" as communion procession on Ash Wednesday.

I find it odd that a Roman church should be signing a psalm tune that is practically a Protestant Anthem. Moreover, this is posted by someone who waxes nostalgic for the pre-VII days.

Guess what pal? So what's your point? I have been a substitute organist for many protestant services and many were using contemporary pieces from RC ligurgies, eg. 'We are Called', 'Here I am, Lord', And 'Yaweh, i know'. We Catholics also sing "A Mighty Fortress" and "The God of Abraham Prais" - predominantly Lutheran Hymns. Have a problem with that? if not, then stop bitching!!!
