Toru Takemitsu: "Rain Tree Sketch" (1982) Roger Woodward, piano. Toru Takemitsu created his own unique musical language by merging elements of Eastern and Western traditions. The origin of the Rain Tree Sketch can be traced back to Takemitsus Rain Tree (1981) for percussion trio. Rain Tree (the percussion trio) was based on a description of a rain tree in Kenzaburo Oes novel Clever Rain Tree (1980). Oe's story describes a tree with countless tiny leaves that collect and retain water from the morning rain shower so that throughout the day, after the storm has abated, the rain still falls from the tree. In Oes novel, the rain tree is used as a metaphor of water circulating in the cosmos. Takemitsu employed Messiaen's modes of limited transposition in order to construct pitch collections evocative of cosmic imagery. Takemitsu carefully notates differentiated dynamics and accents, as well as precise pedaling techniques to lend careful nuance to these moment-to-moment contours.

  • PhillyT2020; the less a person understands something the more angry they become at those who do understand. There's no big secret here, you simply have to throw away any preconceptions or expectations and listen to the music on its own terms. If you are unable to do this, fine-go and listen to some country music or read a comic. But please don't put up posts suggesting that everyone who likes what you don't is fake or pompous because that is unfair. Cunt.

  • This is the perfect alliance between the East conception of the floating worlds and Debussy's aesthetic. It is also true the french composer was fascinated by far Asian musics. Takemistu is definitly a great master in refined simplicity.

  • Hermoso ♥

  • And I'm going to play this, this semester! And that makes me so HAPPY!

  • @PhillyT2020 Where is the inauthenticity in experiencing this work positively?

  • @swirls999 i think the cunt was unnecessary o-o

  • I'm just not big on anger and insults, that's all. My "cunt of a cunt" was a bit of irony. If some are fortunate to be more intelligent, knowledgeable, shouldn't they help those others that aren't so lucky? Don't you want to spread this good stuff? Then it's got to be love, not anger.

  • @swirls999 Hear, here.

  • @bluepianopoet Oh, do fuck off. Swirls' comment is letter perfect.

It's no mystery why certain people don't understand certain things: they lack certain cognitive capacities. No exploratory effort need be made to flesh out one's theory of mind on this score.

Some of us who *do* possess uncommon faculties are quite sick of maudlin levelers and their emetogenic admonitions that we tactfully pretend intelligence has been evenly distributed.

Unapologetic elitism is a good thing.

  • @PhillyT2020 What the fuck are atonality musicians and what the fuck is Gregorian monk style? InsertName125 is bang on; if you really are a trained musician you will, no doubt, have been trained in writing pastiches as part of your composition training - try writing 4 bars of piano music in this style and put it up on youtube, go on - I dare you. Oh, and while you're at it why don't you write a rap and perform it on youtube - now there's a much easier offer; apparently anyone can do it. Tool.

  • @bluepianopoet Not when some pompous cretin tries to imply that I'm somehow a pretentious fake because I like Takemitsu's music.

  • @amorpaz1 Thankyou
