Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East. The great majority of its estimated 76 million[1] live near the banks of the Nile River, in an area of about 40,000 square kilometers (15,000 sq mi), where the only arable agricultural land is found. The large areas of the Sahara Desert are sparsely inhabited. About half of Egypt's residents live in urban areas, with the majority spread across the densely-populated centres of greater Cairo, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta.
Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most famous monuments, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx. The southern city of Luxor contains numerous ancient artifacts, such as the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Egypt is widely regarded as an important political and cultural nation of the Middle East.

La Repubblica Araba d'Egitto (arabo: جمهوريّة مصر العربيّة, Jumhūriyya Misr al-ʿArabiyya , dove con مصر, Miṣr, si intende l'Egitto) è uno Stato del Nord Africa. Include la Penisola del Sinai, il che rende l'Egitto un paese che fa parte anche dell'Asia. La principale parte abitata del paese si estende ai lati del fiume Nilo. Vaste aree dell'Egitto sono coperte dalle sabbie del Sahara e sono disabitate.
Miṣr, il nome arabo e ufficiale del moderno Egitto, è una parola di origine semitica, affine all'ebraico מִצְרַיִם Mitzráyim che significa "i due stretti". L'antico nome del paese, kemet, o "terra nera", è dovuto al fertile terreno nero depositato dalle piene del Nilo, distinto dalla "terra rossa", il deserto (deshret). Il nome è diventato keme in una fase successiva del Copto. Il nome italiano Egitto deriva dalla parola latina Aegyptus che a sua volta viene dal greco Αίγυπτος, Aigyptos. Il nome greco potrebbe ancora essere una derivazione dall'egiziano antico Hwt k3 Pth, "casa del Ka di Ptah", nome di un tempio del dio Ptah a Menphi. Nel periodo egizio il termine più usato, soprattutto nelle titolature ufficiali, fu t3wy traducibile come Le Due Terre, termine indicante l'unione del Basso e dell'Alto Egitto.
