Keynote Address by Professor Irwin Cotler delivered at the 2007 Holocaust commemoration ceremony at the European Headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva.
Professor Cotler is a member of Canada's parliament and its former Minister of Justice. A board member of the Geneva-based UN Watch (www.unwatch.org), Cotler is a distinguished academic and a prominent human rights lawyer, whose dedication to humanitarian causes has earned him the Order of Canada and many other awards. Professor Cotler has represented Andrei Sakharov and Anatoly Sharansky in the Soviet Union, Nelson Mandela in South Africa, Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and most recently Saad Edin Ibrahim, an Egyptian sociologist and democracy advocate whose criticism of Egypt's Mubarak government resulted in his incarceration. Maclean's magazine has referred to Cotler as "Counsel for the Oppressed." He has been a leader in the development of international humanitarian law and has to his credit landmark cases in free speech, freedom of religion, women's rights, minority rights and peace law.

"to stand up and be counted, and not look around to see who ever else is standing before we make a judgment to do so. Because in the world in which we live, there are few enough people prepare to stand, let alone to be counted."
What an honorable man!

Humanity has already failed the countless people who were murdered during the Holocaust because humanity allowed the Rwanda genocide to occur.

Outstanding speech...yet the leaders around the world have stood silent while genocide has been taking place in numerous nations since the end of WWII. Unfortunately, Mr. Colter, too many nations pride themselves on hate and so it seems we are destined to witness more mass killings. Thankfully, organizations such as UN Watch are exposing those countries for all the world to see.
