The problem is, if one of these pieces of burning, essentially molten, metal lands on you it's going to stick to you and burn you badly and burn itself into you if it's big enough.

Be careful if you're doing this. The 'flint' in a lighter is actually a man-made metal called Ferrocerium (The same stuff used in firesteel). My guess is that when it's heated up, it makes the metal brittle enough to smash, and when you throw it against something, it smashes into a lot of tiny pieces of metal which are now small enough to be ignited by the heat. And, well, they do.
