The video shows a side impact system which was developed within an EU founded project APROSYS. A stereo camera and radar system detects an upcoming object from the side of a car. Approx. 200 ms before the crash an actuator establishes a new load path between the seat structure and the door. This connection absorbs a significant amount of crash energy which leads to a reduction of intrusion and so mitigates the severity of the crash. Several partners from all over Europe are involved to this sub project of the integrated project APROSYS.
Fraunhofer LBF develops the actuation system and the benefits to our customers are:
- Development of high dynamic actuators
- Knowledge of smart material like SMA which are used here
- System design and integration
