Snake Is Kyle Reese from the terminator! Google Kyle Reese and look at the first picture.

to put all the uncertainty to rest. The original solid snake was actually based on multiple action heroes of the time, and his original look (on the box art) was based on Michael Biehn's portrayal of Kyle Reese in the original terminator film.
If you Kyle Reese the images usually shown are of him in the same pose as on the metal gear cover. The resemblance is striking.
And the original art for big boss was in fact based on Sean Connery.

@LieutenantSpeirs There hasn't even been any word on that movie in absolutely forever though...And Snake isn't based off of Kurt Russell, Hideo Kojima just named him after Snake Pliskin.
