In this latest installment, we show the preparation for the glass casting. At the end, we show our home-made way to grind the edge of the mirror blank.

  • does regular glass turn to lens or is the mold specualy made

  • We flat stack pieces of glass that are from the same family, from one piece of glass. We heat the oven to over 1750 degrees and hold it between 6 & 8 hours. We quick cool it to the akneeling point depending on the thickness of the glass.

  • I tried this a few years ago using a propane-fired kiln and borosilicate glass. Unfortunately the roar from the kiln was so loud that the neighbors called the police who thought I was running a methamphetamine lab and came VERY close to shooting me before I could explain.

At any rate, it worked and I still have the mirror blank.

  • How do u make curve?

  • Do you sell glass blanks for Telescope mirrors.

    say 200mm x 34mm thick.

  • Could you tell something about the construction of the oven itself?

  • "How do u make curve?"

On the viewing side? It's ground on by going over, and over, and over, and over it with a lap and honing compound. Because the glass wears so slowly, and the blank is constantly rotated, error even themselves out to very little. Huge mirrors are spun as their molten to get the curve roughly right, then polished. They also have actuators at the back to correct for any remaining errors and heater to get it all the same temperature.

  • Hi Guys, I like the furnace. How much nichrome wire is that? What's the wattage?

    Cheers!

  • Where and what are the raw glass materials ?

  • @DirtyThing20

LOTS of grinding. or a really special mold. which takes lots of grinding.

  • Really impressive muffle ! What is the working temperature so that the soda lime glass starts to melt ?

  • @pupplesan Glass is a terrible drug.

  • That awsome thanks for posting this video. I was wondering how they made telescope mirror's. Btw what is the size of this thing ? It looks huge like 20" +
