Yawnhockel, what are your thoughts on Germany and France executing pirates when they are caught off the coast of Somolia? I think China does this too but I'm not exactly sure. It is based on maritime laws that go back hundreds of years! The thing is, some of these pirates are VERY young! I heard they shot a 15 yr old. Maybe they should drop leaflets in Somolia warning of the death penalty if caught pirating off he coast huh? Just wondering what you think.

Well, I hardly think that piracy merits the death penalty. However, it is notable that in cultures where there is a harsh penalty enforced for mediocre crimes...the crime rate is very low. Being a Christian, I am persuaded that people make mistakes and even deliberately do evil. But I would like to think that given a chance, most people can make some reformation in their lives. But execution must fit the crime, in my opinion. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.

Thats simply not true, your reading into YOUR definition something that isn't there. People speak out against the government in this country ALL THE TIME! Its called free speech. The line is drawn if you use vail threats against someones life or deliberately cause undo panic such as yelling FIRE when there isnt any fire or BOMB when there isnt a bomb. If a judge is shown sufficiant evidence then you can be searched and evidence can be seized! Its been this way forever. Nothing new here.

Look, martykean1967...you really need to calm down a bit and keep in mind that I am suggesting that the patriot act has the potential to be misused in the future. Certainly, there are people in the government who will do everything possible to help protect our rights, but there are also people like Colonel Oliver North who were involved in the Iran Contra scandal who would seek to develope plans like Readiness exercise 1984 to detain American citizens.

Man you are so right when you mentioned Oliver North! Selling weapons to Iran who even at that time was continuously referring to us as the "Great Satan!" I know you and many others are scared that these powers MAY be misused at sometime in the future, ( so am I to be honest!) But we have to have these arrows in our quiver BEFORE we need them to handle situations as they arise. You and I both love our country and as much as this sucks I think its still needed in this day and age of terrorism!
