I've always thought the part where the doctor and his friend stay and listen to someone drowning just never seemed realistic.
I kind of have mixed feelings on the opera. I learned about most of the final act when I was a teenager but saw a full production a few years ago and didn't like it. I still like those later scenes, more or less; maybe I was lucky enough to have heard them when I was still open-minded.

I always loved the orchestration at 4:34 here. I don't know why-- the glock scaling downward, while the basses ascending--like the world just turned upside down.
