it would be the room should be soundproofed as much as possible to minimise reflections and the mic / cables / mixer (all the analog stuff) including the DAC of the soundcard is of a good quality with shielding. that would produce the best recording. cpu and ram is a non-issue with even a decade old PC as you can plainly see.
What kind of MIDI controller and stereo speakers where you using? Was M-Audio around during that time?

The speakers are event 20/20s. midi controller i'm not sure on tho - can't remember.

It was an Audio Technica mike with phantom power. Pretty good for the time!
