Finally I found the technique my mother showed me before she passed away - I was not sure I'd got it right, but his is so much more natural to me, than the other ways I've looked at. THANKS :o)

The only way this would be better is with a higher contrast setup -- dark background, pale yarn, better lighting. but hey, it;s awesome!
