A short clip taken at the Forney Transportation Museum in Denver. My 10 yr. old son shot the video and I sorta narrated. (It's a 52 MB clip, so it will take a while to load. One day I'll figure out how to lessen the MB size of these things.) The camera is a Canon S3IS, video shot in 640x480 size, 1411kbps, 16bit PCM audio, @ 30 fps.

The 'Big Boy' is a 4-8-8-4 single-expansion articulated type steam locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York for the Union Pacific Railroad between 1941-1944. The total length of the locomotive and tender combination coupled is 132' 9-7/8 inches. The tender has a maximum capacity of 24,000 gallons of water and 28 tons of coal. When fully loaded the combination weight is over one million pounds. The term 'Big Boy' originated when a workman wrote those words on the smoke box.

  • @GrapeApe226 sorry about that looks like someone left a typo

  • @geomodelrailroader I didn't ask what a "Big Boy" was, I asked what a Bog Boy was. LOL. Sorry, I didn't know how to reply, I don't leave comments much and I rarely respond to anothers comment. But I couldn't resist picking on me brother's typo hehe. TraynDryvr and I have been to this Loco together back when the 10 y/o was a 2 y/o. It was sitting out back of the building after having just moved it. We took the liberty of having a seat in the cab for a bit and listen to the ghosts :)

  • @GrapeApe226 A Big Boy is the largest locomotive in the world. UP had 100 of these mosters they pulled trains over the Sherman Range in Wyoming and the Wasatch Range in Utah. none of the 100 Big Boys are running they are just gathering dust in some museum. Only Challengers which are the little brothers of the Big Boys are still alive and only one remains #3985 the last and king of the Chalengers.

  • What's a "Bog Boy" ?

  • An excellent preservation of a 4-8+8-4 UP/American Locomotive Class BB-1 single-expansion articulated, originally built to pull massive freight loads up the grades of the Wasatch Range, UT, USA.

  • the mileage these boys had, 6 figures lol n yet i bet if someone lit the fire they could do another few hundred thousand miles!

  • @BobbyJEL101 it didnt kill 1 guy he died almost half a year later from complications :( hes the one that gave the critical info on who was at falt for the drailment
