Lying triceps extensions (also known as "skull crushers" or "french press") are a great upper arm exercise to isolate your triceps with.

Often they are done with a barbell and if you work out at home and don't have one the most likely advice you get to substitute with are two dumbbells. This is not ideal, because it makes it easier to cheat on the exercise.

In this video we look at a simple alternative that uses only one dumbbell and minimizes bad form.

  • When i'm doing this my elbows are cracking sound , and it feels kinda bad , maybe u know the reason ?

  • Joints occasionally crack, but if you actually have pain from this that certainly is not good! Leave this exercise for now and please see a doctor to check if everything is ok.

  • doing these hurts my elbows, am i doing them incorrectly or is the weight too heavy?

  • It's hard to say if you do them correctly without having seen what you do.

    I'd say do try to use less weight and if that doesn't help go for another triceps exercise - not every exercise works for everyone. If the pain continues regardless of what type of exercise you do, it may be a good idea to check with your doctor.

  • @Evilcyber Well i believe i am doing them correctly as i tried them and corrected my mistake by studying the video, if that makes sense :) I will try less weight any other tricep exercises you can recommend?

  • just grab the dumbbell by the sides where the thread is, and you'll have a mini barbell, but it's enough for skullcrushers
