  • What a terrific opera this is. And when you have first-rate singers/actors (as here, for the most part), a superb orchestra and first-rate Verdi conductor (ditto) PLUS a splendid director (John Dexter, wasn't it?) -- well, opera as an art form doesn't get much better --

  • Fine acting and singing from both, Plishka makes a scary king.

  • Plishka was never heard to better advantage than here.

  • Blimey, isn't Plishka scary here? I love it, and he sounds wonderful too. Having Milnes also in fine voice and looking very handsome, you have a very effective scene of a terrific opera.

  • @DonPaolissimo thanks haha if I see anything i'll let you know

  • @ShawDAMAN I am searching all over - so far, niente. But, this performance is a part of the Levine comemmorative set of several operas, so I am certain that eventually, a copy will "break out" of the complete package!

  • @DonPaolissimo i wanna know the same thing.

  • THis was a great performance - does a complete DVD exist? If so, please inform where I can get a copy! Thanks.

  • Plishka does so much with this role that others don't; he really inhabits this personage. Bravo!

  • @xmetbass

What the hell is a lyric basso profondo? You mean like Wilhelm Streinz? Or Endre Koreh? Or Shadi Torbey?

I presume you sing Osmin and Seneca and interpolate low Cs into everything else.

  • @Sieglinde84

Quilico was certainly a better Verdi baritone in the theater - bigger voice. Milnes early on when the voice was fresh was excellent but it wasn't quite big and rich enough for the big roles in big houses.

  • A shame the "popular" Met dvd has Louis Quilico instead of Milnes. That man just ruins it...
