A pit bull attacked a 9-year-old girl on Matlea Court in east Charlotte so badly that she may need plastic surgery. Jonathan Hall said a stranger gave him the pit bull. "Some dude down the street gave it to me for free," he said. But the teen said his mother wouldn't let him keep the dog. So on Thursday he went next door and asked his neighbors, the Moquetes, if they wanted the animal as a playmate for their German shepherd. The Moquetes said they were considering the offer and spending a few minutes getting to know the pit bull. Then, they said, Jisseth Moquete bent down to pet the dog and it attacked her face. Her brother, Junior Moquete, said, "(I've) never been in this type of situation with any of my family." "She got scratches all over her face," he said. Jisseth Moquete was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center. "I feel bad because the little girl didn't deserve that," Hall said. Animal Control took the dog and is investigating the case. They said its too early to tell if anyone will face charges. There's no word what will happen to the dog, other than he'll get tested for rabies.

A Charlotte girl is expected to recover after she was bitten on the face and neck by a neighbor's pit bull in her home on Thursday. Nine-year-old Jisseth Moquete was sitting in her family's living room when their next-door neighbor and his pit bull entered the house. Her brother Henry Moquete, 12, said the dog had been running around the neighborhood and playing with his family's German shepherd. When the owner caught up with the dog in their yard, he stepped inside to talk, Henry said. She was petting him, Henry said. He starts growling. Then I heard my sister screaming. Henry saw the dog's jaws fastened around his sister's face. The dog's owner grabbed the brown pit bull and threw him off Jisseth, but she was already covered in blood. She was bleeding a lot, said Junior Moquete, Henry's older brother. Their mother, who was upstairs changing her baby's diaper, rushed downstairs. She was telling mom, I'm not gonna die, I don't want to die,' Junior said. When police arrived at the new subdivision off Plaza Road, Henry said that the pit bull barked at them and two officers drew their guns, but the owner was able to control the dog before the officers shot. Animal control removed the dog. Jisseth, a rising third-grader who loves to play bachata songs on her guitar, was listed in good condition at Carolinas Medical Center. Her mother, Marlene Moquete, said her daughter has dozens of stitches down the left side of her face and along her jaw line. Doctors told her they'll have to wait and see if the girl needs surgery. A young man who answered the door on Thursday at the dog owner's house wouldn't say anything to the Observer. But the man earlier told Observer news partner WCNC that he got the dog, named Rocky, from a man he didn't know on Wednesday. He was trying to give it away, so I took it, Jonathan Hall said to WCNC. I feel bad because that little girl didn't deserve that. Neighbors said the dog hadn't been a problem so far, and had been around the neighborhood playing with kids. (The owner) said it doesn't bite, said Jerald Gardner, 7, who lives in the neighborhood. As of Thursday night no charges had been filed in connection with the attack.
