Veterans Day, 2011 - University of Maryland

The University of Maryland honored its veteran's community of faculty, staff and students during the annual Veterans Day celebration program on November 11, 2011 in the Memorial Chapel on the College Park campus. "It is important that we remember the service and outstanding contributions of these individuals to the nation and our community," said Vice President for Student Affairs Linda Clement. "We are thrilled and honored to continue the tradition of honoring the service of our Veterans through this event and other activities on campus."

Dr. Clement acted as host. Participants included University of Maryland President Dr. Wallace Loh, who offered welcoming remarks. Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Valarie R. Austin, U.S. Army (Computer Science Major, Class of 2014) lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reflections on their experience in the military and as Veterans were offered by:

• Rick Hearin (Director, University Career Center & The President's Promise)
• Shelly Burgoyne (Pat Tillman Military Scholar & Master's Candidate, Public Policy )
• Edward M. Downey (University of Maryland Alumnus and Former Member, University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board of Trustees)

University chorus Femmes de Chanson offered two musical selections. The popular musical recognition of all Veterans and their families was played by the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band.

The celebration concluded with a buffet lunch served in the West Chapel Garden. Thanks to a generous donor, $10 was provided towards Veteran's outreach at the University for each participant in the Veterans Day celebration program. The event garnered 293 attendees, meaning that $3000 was donated towards veterans outreach!
