Native Hawaiians occupy palace grounds

STORY SUMMARY »

Iolani Palace, home of Hawaiian monarchs and one
of Honolulu's most popular attractions, was
closed for several hours yesterday as a Hawaiian
sovereignty group occupied the grounds peacefully.

State sheriffs and special agents responded as
members of the self- described Hawaiian Kingdom
Government turned away the public beginning
around 9 a.m.

Several dozen state workers and tourists were
inconvenienced. The protest ended after 2 p.m.,
but the group promised to return this morning.

  • I was not born here. I lived many years in the U.S. But, the first time I came home to Hawaii, I could feel the aina, I could feel the spirit still that lives here. My husband and I have only felt truly 'at home' here - and we've both travelled extensively.

We are with you. We are fully behind the movement to Free Hawaii from the illegal overthrow of the U.S. government.

  • I am a grandson of a war bride. We are direct descendants of the Queen. We are very proud. I support my people and our autonomy. To all the mainlanders that assert they would draw back their money. I assure you, we do not need your money and we were just fine before your overpriced, built to break, Wal-Mart chinese goods ever arrived. Rest in peace Auntie Momi. Godspeed Mahealani.

  • i am not full kanaka maoli, i am a mixture of tongan, hawaiian, chinese, and haole. but i was raised in and taught to be proud of the hawaiian culture, i may be on the mainland, but ever since day one of my life my heart has belonged to the islands of hawaii. i support independence of the islands

  • Hawai'i needs a REVOLUTION.

  • fuk dat fuka

  • please do not let kazuo36 speak for all americans. it is becoming very apparent that european colonialists broke humanitarian laws against indegenous people on every continent. it is a fact that most of these indegenous peoples are dark skinned. the european wrote Romanus Pontifax and Inter Caetera law to wipe the original indegenous peoples (who come from africa) out of history. today we are divided and conquered under different names that were forced on us.

  • “Tho’ for a moment it [the overthrow] cost

me a pang of pain for my people it was only momentary,

for the present has a hope for the future of my

    people.”

—Former Queen Lili‘uokalani in her diary on Sunday,

    September 2, 1900.
