Which Came First, The Chicken Or The Egg?

This question is designed to be a paradox. Each answer seems to lead to a new question that contradicts the answer. If we say chicken then what did the chicken come from? How was the chicken born? If we say egg then what laid the egg? What sat on the egg to hatch it?

The answers go in a circle pointing to each other.

This seems to prevent a logical answer until a timeline is created. If we start at the beginning of time, the answer will show itself.

Evolution:

One aspect of the theory of evolution is that creatures evolve slowly over time. We can use this to understand that the creature the chicken evolved from laid eggs. At one point in time the chicken came into being. The creature the chicken evolved from laid eggs that chickens hatched from. So, we can conclude that the egg came before the chicken. What laid the egg? The creature the chicken evolved from.

Creationism:

It seems logical that God created the chicken. It is not likely that God or Adam were sitting on eggs waiting for them to hatch.

Also, Genesis states:

On The Fifth Day God Created:
"every winged bird according to its kind" - Genesis 1:21

So, the answer is Chicken.

Answers:

Eggs - Evolution
Chicken - Creationism

Update:

July 14, 2010 - British scientists reported their discovery that chickens need a protein Ovocledidin -17 (OC 17) to lay eggs. Based upon this discovery the scientists concluded that the chicken came first. This is somewhat ironic that science is supporting creationism. Let's see if anything changes with our answers.

News story of this discovery

Creationism states that the chicken came first. The science backs this up so no changes.

Evolution states that the egg came first. The discovery also backs up this idea. The creature that the chicken evolved from was an egg layer. The egg layer had this protein or a similar protein and laid the egg that the chicken hatched from. The answer is still the egg.

So are the scientists wrong? Not at all. We can make a modification to the question. Which came first the egg layer or the egg? Again, we can take a look at the evolution timeline. Single celled creatures do not lay eggs, so at a some point in time, the egg layers evolved from non-egg layers. As the creatures evolved they developed more egg laying attributes. Eventually one of these pre-egg layers had an offspring that could lay egg(s). So, the first egg layers were born from non-egg layers. The answer to the modified question is the egg layers came before the egg.

Modified Answers - Backed Up By The New Discovery:
Creationism - Chicken
Evolution (Chicken or Egg) - Egg
Evolution (Egg Layer or Egg) - Egg Layer Creature

  • Chicken come first because i think chickens from the ancient times don't lay eggs. And after thousands of years of evolutionary changes it began to lay eggs(reasons? i don't know)

  • chicken first , because nobody will lay a egg , and nobody will warm a egg . An egg can't be a chicken when the egg is not warm (sry for bad english)

  • @ikilluforcoffe yeah fuck everyone and the egg first

  • Egg came first. that bird that was named a chicken.. came from an Egg. Even if a crocodile laid the egg that hatched the Chicken (not saying it did) the Egg was there before the Chicken. Therefore the Egg came first.

  • @SheiLaLa360 Umm do you have a better way of explaining how the universe was created? NO I didn't think so idiot. If you tell me genisis Im going to ignore you forever. -_-

  • @sdafsdfdsafsdfdsafsa Yea I'm smarter and less idiotic now. Your right but the single celled organism came before all of this lol.

  • @NoJustNoStopReally the chicken egg was warmed by its mother, the species that laid the egg would have come from a long line of egg layers so the mother would have known what to do, it's just one day through mutation and evolution the species laid an egg with a chicken in side it hence the chicken egg came first. This is fact so everyone can just relax now.

  • @ian9toes what you talking about willis?

I would argue it is a chicken egg if it has a chicken in it...the egg came first you eggtard! plus eggs were around long before chickens so it's logical the egg came first. DEFUNCT!

  • Egg layers, hahaha. So are we to assume that there was a species that gave birth to live young, then by some sort of a miracle a mutation created a live young with an "egg layer". This new "egg layer" some how gave it a better chance of survival. I would have thought being born alive would allow the organism to run away from predetors, instead of having to fight it's way out of an "egg layer". Is this the same way that the eye came about, through the evolution of "eye layers".
