This was in 1980, it was his second fight in the lightweight division, his first was the fight with Boza-Edwards, about every guy he fought at lightweight is tough but Ramirez was the best he fought at lightweight.

Ramirez moves well on his feet here and uses a (right) jab.

He's also faster here than he was later.

Ramirez was a great Lightweight. There is a story about the fight between Mancini vs Ramirez that the fix was in. Jose Suleiman WBC president and the promoters fix the fight to let Mancini win. Ramirez did not throw to many punches, and when he did he missed by a mile.. The promoters wanted Mancini to win because "Boom Boom" was a more popular fighter. After that fight JL Ramirez got more championship fights for the WBC belt vs Rosario, Camacho, Terrence Ali, JC Chavez, and Whitaker.
