The choir of Wells Cathedral sing Charles Wesley's wonderful hymn Love divine, all loves excelling to the beautiful tune Blaenwern under the direction of Malcolm Archer. The descant at the end is superb. Again I only post this because it is one of my favourite hymns. All the pictures used are of Wells Cathedral.

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee:

Changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

  • I last sang this in a church to another tune over 50 years ago, and this music makes the other tune that I loved then seem very plain.

  • Goosebumps,yes I have,...Thanks for sharing it!

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (Dec. 18, Advent 4), we sang this as our Closing Hymn. However, it was to the tune, HYFRYDOL, composed by Rowland H. Prichard, 1811-1887. It is # 631 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

  • Why can't I stop listening to the hymn? I'ts angelic and the tune divine, PRAISE BE TO GOD IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

  • Wells certainly produces some of the best music sounds in any English Cathedral.But while we are in the West Country let us also remember the beautiful Exeter and Truro Cathedrals.
