On February 7, Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko will face-off with Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych in a second round of the presidential vote in Ukraine. Yanokovych, who five years ago, after a fraudulent vote and unprecedented third round lost to Viktor Yushchenko in what became known as the Orange Revolution, today has a 10% lead over Tymoshenko, a former Yushchenko ally. However, analysts say that she could close the gap with votes of Yanukovych opponents who voted for other candidates in the first round.
We discussed the upcoming election with former US Ambassador to Ukraine, today Vice President of the US Institute of Peace William Taylor (seated to the left in the video below), National Endowment for Democracy Vice President Nadia Diuk and Associate Director for the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for American Progress Samuel Charap. The discussion, hosted by Voice of Americas Ukrainian Service, was led by Myroslava Gongadze.
